The magnificent A3 Pacific 'Flying Scotsman' restarts the Yorkshire Pullman after an unscheduled delay at Walton crossing on the outskirts of Peterborough. On the nearby Midland line a 4F locomotive struggling with a slow freight is almost insignificant against the volcanic drama of the Flying Scotsman as she attempts to make up time on her journey to Kings Cross, London.

The Midland railway had a level crossing working independently of the main line and it was quite common for road users heading towards Marholm, Ufford and Stamford to find themselves trapped in between the gates at busy times. From the vantage point we can see the houses in Mead Close adjacent to the main line.

I have tried to depict the Flying Scotsman in final B.R. livery during the twilight of its career when steam could still fire the imagination of captivated onlookers, although nearby residents with their drying washing might not share such sentiments!
